About the Research Affiliate Program

For postgraduate students looking to undertake a longer-term research or fieldwork project in South Africa, particularly those wishing to stay for more than 90 days.

As a Research Affiliate, you can undertake a substantial research or fieldwork project in South Africa while being registered independently with Stellenbosch University as an Affiliate Research Student.

iKapa Impact provides the practical placement and research curation, helping you shape your project around your academic interests and matching you with a suitable South African organization, initiative or community-based setting where your research or fieldwork can be undertaken. We also facilitate connections with an appropriate academic supervisor.

Research Affiliate includes:

• Research project matching and curation aligned with your academic interests
• Fieldwork placement with a relevant South African organization, initiative or community
• Support to develop a practical research or fieldwork plan
• Facilitation of connections with an appropriate academic supervisor
• Guidance throughout the placement and fieldwork process
• Stellenbosch University Affiliate Research Student registration — completed directly by the student with Stellenbosch University

This pathway is designed for postgraduate students who want to move beyond a conventional internship and undertake deeper, longer-term research or fieldwork within a South African context, with iKapa Impact curating the practical experience and local connections that support their project.

Stellenbosch University registration, academic approval, fees and visa requirements apply. Students are responsible for completing their own Affiliate Research Student application and meeting the University's requirements.
